FBI Plans Nationwide License Plate Tracking Network Covering Three-Quarters of U.S.

On May 14, 2026, the FBI released a contract request for real-time access to license plate reader networks across 75 percent of U.S. locations. The existing system—already in 46 states—has located 818 wanted persons and 19 missing people. The new federal framework would enable unprecedented nationwide vehicle surveillance on highways and roads.
