Burnham orders review of early prisoner release scheme

On his second day as prime minister, Andy Burnham said he will review the early prisoner release policy with Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood. Speaking in Bath, Burnham said he could not promise to scrap it entirely but would examine it in detail before proceeding. Tens of thousands of inmates have been released since September 2024 to ease overcrowding.
