Burnham orders review of early prisoner release scheme on second day as PM

On his second day in office, Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he will review the early prisoner release policy alongside Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood. Speaking in Bath, Burnham said: "I can't say that I can change the policy completely, but I will look at it in detail before we go further forward." Tens of thousands of inmates have been released since September 2024 to ease prison overcrowding.
