Trump applies unused Depression-era tariff law to Canadian dairy, alcohol and other goods

Trump imposed 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian alcohol, dairy and other goods under Section 338 of the Tariff Act — a 1930s provision never before used. The levies take effect August 19 with no CUSMA exemption. Carney said Canada will consider retaliation only if the tariffs proceed. Both leaders agreed by phone to intensify trade talks immediately.
