Trump invokes never-used Depression-era law for 50% tariffs on Canadian dairy, alcohol, other goods

Trump imposed 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian alcohol, dairy and other goods under Section 338 of the Tariff Act — a Depression-era provision never previously invoked. The levies take effect August 19 with no CUSMA exemption. Carney said Canada will consider retaliation only if the tariffs are implemented. He and Trump agreed by phone to intensify trade discussions immediately.
