Brazil's Burned Area Drops 58% in 2025, Amazon Fires Hit 41-Year Low

Brazil's burned area fell from 30 million hectares in 2024 to roughly 12.7 million in 2025, with the Amazon seeing its fewest fires in 41 years, per MapBiomas data. The drop coincided with La Niña's cooler conditions replacing El Niño. IPAM researcher Vera Arruda cautioned it "does not yet allow us to conclude that this is an established trend or to scale back prevention efforts."
