Brazil's Burned Area Plummets 58% in 2025 as Amazon Fires Hit 41-Year Low
Brazil's burned area fell to roughly 12.7 million hectares in 2025, down from 30 million in 2024, with the Amazon recording its fewest fires in 41 years, per MapBiomas data. The decline coincided with cooler La Niña conditions replacing El Niño. IPAM researcher Vera Arruda cautioned it "does not yet allow us to conclude that this is an established trend or to scale back prevention efforts."
