Brazil Cut Its Burned Land by More Than Half in 2025

Brazil's burned land shrank from 30 million hectares to about 12.7 million in 2025 — a 58% drop — and the Amazon saw its fewest fires in 41 years, per MapBiomas data. The decline came as cooler La Niña weather replaced El Niño's heat. Researcher Vera Arruda of IPAM warned this isn't yet a lasting trend and prevention efforts should continue.
