Burnham scraps VAT on household electricity from October

The Treasury confirmed that new Prime Minister Andy Burnham has abolished the 5% VAT on household electricity bills from 1 October 2026. The reduced rate had applied UK-wide since 1997. The Independent called it his first major policy announcement. Downing Street said the measure gives households "breathing space on cost of living."
