New PM Burnham abolishes VAT on household electricity bills from October

The Treasury confirmed that new Prime Minister Andy Burnham has abolished the 5% VAT on household electricity bills, effective 1 October 2026. The Independent described it as his first major policy announcement. The reduced rate had applied UK-wide since 1997. Downing Street said the measure gives households "breathing space on cost of living."
