New PM Andy Burnham cuts tax on household electricity bills

The Treasury confirmed that new Prime Minister Andy Burnham has scrapped the 5% tax on household electricity bills from 1 October 2026. That tax had applied across the whole UK since 1997. The Independent called it his first big policy move. Downing Street said it gives households "breathing space on cost of living."
