UN Rapporteur Joins Court Challenge to Woodside's North West Shelf Gas Extension

A UN Special Rapporteur — an independent human rights expert — now has amicus curiae ("friend of the court") status in federal challenges to Environment Minister Watt's approval of Woodside's North West Shelf gas extension to 2070. Astrid Puentes Riaño cites the ICJ's July 2025 ruling that a healthy environment is a human right. Conservation groups ACF and Fara argue Watt failed to weigh emissions and heritage damage properly.
