Government scraps council-iwi partnership agreements, Labour warns of Treaty settlement fallout

The government has scrapped Mana Whakahono ā Rohe — statutory agreements between councils and iwi that connect Treaty settlements to local resource management decisions. Only eight existed. Labour's Rachel Brooking says removing the only legal link between settlements and council implementation will force them to be relitigated. ACT leader David Seymour called scrapping the agreements "absolutely necessary."
