Government refuses to concede compensation over British Steel takeover

The UK fully nationalised British Steel on 16 July 2026. Former owner Jingye, a Chinese firm, demands "full compensation" and has launched treaty-based consultation — a formal step towards international arbitration. A government spokesperson said autumn regulations will let an independent assessor decide "what, if any, compensation is payable."
