Government takes over British Steel — but says it may owe nothing

The government took full control of British Steel on 16 July 2026. Jingye, the Chinese company that used to own it, wants payment and is preparing a legal challenge under international rules. A government spokesperson said an independent expert will decide this autumn whether any money is owed at all.
