UK government does not concede any compensation is owed for British Steel nationalisation

The UK government fully nationalised British Steel on 16 July 2026. Jingye, the former Chinese owner, demands "full compensation through legal means to the very end." A government spokesperson said draft regulations due in autumn will let an independent assessor decide "what, if any, compensation is payable." Jingye has also begun treaty-based consultation toward arbitration.
