UK Government Reviews Fate of Social Mobility Commission

UK ministers are considering options from strengthening to abolishing the Social Mobility Commission, The Guardian reports. A Cabinet Office review of arm's length bodies — semi-independent government agencies — found the commission, whose only statutory duty is an annual report, has become a thinktank within government. Abolition would require new legislation. The House of Lords debates social mobility on 4 September.
