Fuel excise rise pushed back a year, restructured into smaller steps

The government has delayed fuel excise increases by one year, shifting a planned 12-cent-per-litre rise from January 2027 to 2028. Transport Minister Chris Bishop said the remaining rises will be restructured into six-monthly 5-cent increments totalling 20 cents by end of 2029 — 2 cents less than originally planned. Fuel excise has not risen since 2020.
