Government delays fuel excise increase by one year, restructures remaining rises
The government has delayed fuel excise increases by one year, pushing a planned 12-cent-per-litre rise from January 2027 to 2028. Transport Minister Chris Bishop said the remaining increases will be restructured into six-monthly 5-cent increments totalling 20 cents by end of 2029 — 2 cents less than the original 22-cent plan. Fuel excise has not risen since 2020.
