Petrol tax rise delayed by a year, split into smaller increases

The government has delayed a petrol tax rise by one year, pushing a 12-cent-per-litre increase from 2027 to 2028. Transport Minister Chris Bishop said the rest will come in smaller 5-cent steps every six months, reaching 20 cents by end of 2029 — 2 cents less than first planned. The tax has not gone up since 2020.
