BMW's Color-Changing Car Paint Reaches Production

The BMW iX3 Flow Edition is the first production car with color-changing paint that actually works in the real world. The technology uses electricity to shift colors on demand, but only consumes power during the change itself—not to hold a color. BMW unveiled the concept in 2022. Getting it from prototype to factory required solving practical problems: the paint had to survive temperature swings, sun exposure, and impacts on curved surfaces, where earlier versions worked only on flat panels.
