BMW's Color-Changing E Ink Coating Moves from Concept to Production
The iX3 Flow Edition marks the first production vehicle with electrophoretic color-change technology applied as an exterior surface coating. The system consumes power only during transitions, not to maintain static states. BMW first showed the concept at CES 2022. Moving from prototype to manufacturing at scale required solving durability challenges—temperature cycling, UV exposure, impact resistance—across curved automotive surfaces where earlier applications were limited to flat panels.
