Malaysia to Return 1,500 Myanmar Refugees Aboard Navy Ships
Malaysia will repatriate 1,500 Myanmar refugees on September 29 using Myanmar naval vessels, under a deal targeting 5,000 returns. Human Rights Watch says conditions in Myanmar remain unsafe. Because Malaysia hasn't signed the 1951 Refugee Convention, it isn't legally bound to involve UNHCR (the UN refugee agency), leaving independent oversight of the returns unclear.
