USGS: Nepal-Tibet Tremor Was a Glacier Collapse, Not an Earthquake

A glacier collapse killed at least 160 people along the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, 2026. Nepali officials initially blamed a regional earthquake. The US Geological Survey found the 5.2 magnitude tremor was not tectonic — meaning it came from shifting plates — but from glacial rock and ice slamming the valley floor. Hundreds remain missing.
