USGS: Nepal-Tibet Disaster Was a Falling Glacier, Not an Earthquake

A glacier collapse killed at least 160 people along the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, 2026. Nepali officials first said a regional earthquake was responsible. The US Geological Survey found the 5.2 magnitude shaking was not an earthquake — it came from glacier rock and ice crashing into the valley floor. Hundreds remain missing.
