Victoria Ends Secret Transit Levy After Auditor General Flag

Victorian Premier Ben Carroll scrapped a hidden 1% annual public transport fare levy on 27 August 2026 after the auditor general exposed it in a report tabled in parliament the prior day. Running since January 2025, the levy was projected to raise A$8 billion over 37 years for the Suburban Rail Loop and other projects. Carroll cited a lack of transparency in its creation.
