Victoria Scraps Secret Public Transport Levy After Auditor General Exposes It

Victorian Premier Ben Carroll announced on 27 August 2026 the abolition of a secret 1% annual public transport fare levy, expected to raise A$8 billion over 37 years for the Suburban Rail Loop and other projects. The levy, in place since 1 January 2025, was revealed in an auditor general report tabled in parliament on 26 August 2026. Carroll cited a lack of transparency in its creation.
