Victoria Cancels Hidden Tax on Train and Bus Fares

Victorian Premier Ben Carroll cancelled a secret 1% yearly tax on public transport fares on 27 August 2026. A government watchdog — the auditor general, who checks how public money is handled — revealed the tax in a report to parliament the day before. The tax had quietly raised fare prices since January 2025 to fund rail projects. Carroll said it was created without enough openness.
