Ontario Warns It Could Halt Electricity and Rare Earth Exports to the US

Ontario Premier Doug Ford threatened to cut electricity and rare earth metal exports to the US as a trade war escalated beyond tariffs — taxes on imports — into critical infrastructure and strategic minerals. The warning followed US 50% tariffs on roughly $20bn in Canadian imports effective August 22, 2026. Canada announced counter-tariffs on C$27.6bn in US goods starting September 8.
