Ontario Premier Doug Ford threatened to cut electricity and rare earth metal exports to the US amid an escalating trade war, potentially extending the conflict beyond tariffs into critical infrastructure and strategic minerals. The warning followed US 50% tariffs on roughly $20bn in Canadian imports effective August 22, 2026. Canada announced counter-tariffs on C$27.6bn in US goods starting September 8.
