Birmingham Power Failure Halts CrossCountry Services Across Britain

A power cut at CrossCountry's Birmingham control centre on 23 August 2026 disabled its signalling and control systems, forcing the operator to cancel nearly all services across Great Britain. Routes including Glasgow–Edinburgh, Manchester–Birmingham, and Newcastle–Edinburgh were suspended. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said she was "concerned" and asked publicly owned operators to run extra services.
