Power cut at Birmingham control centre halts nearly all CrossCountry trains across Britain

CrossCountry cancelled nearly all train services across Great Britain on 23 August 2026 after a power cut at its Birmingham control centre disabled signalling and control systems. Routes from Glasgow to Edinburgh, Manchester to Birmingham, and Newcastle to Edinburgh were among those suspended. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said she was "concerned" and asked publicly owned operators to run extra services.
