
Power Cut Stops Nearly All CrossCountry Trains Across Britain
On 23 August 2026, a power cut at CrossCountry's Birmingham control centre knocked out the systems that tell trains when it is safe to move. Nearly all services were cancelled across Great Britain, including routes from Glasgow to Edinburgh, Manchester to Birmingham, and Newcastle to Edinburgh. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said she was "concerned" and asked publicly owned operators to run extra services.
