English metro mayors to gain London-style planning override

Housing minister Matthew Pennycook said 13 English combined authority mayors, from Greater Manchester to Tees Valley, will gain "call in" powers to overrule councils on planning decisions — a tool already held by the London mayor. A consultation is due next week. The Conservatives questioned whether councils should lose local decision-making.
