Thirteen English metro mayors to gain London-style planning override powers

Housing minister Matthew Pennycook said mayors across 13 English combined authorities, from Greater Manchester to Tees Valley, will gain "call in" powers to overrule councils on planning decisions — a tool already held by the London mayor. A consultation on the new powers is due next week. The Conservatives questioned whether councils should lose local decision-making.
