English mayors to get power to overrule councils on planning

Housing minister Matthew Pennycook said 13 English mayors, from Greater Manchester to Tees Valley, will gain powers to overrule local councils on planning decisions — something the London mayor can already do. A public consultation opens next week. The Conservatives asked whether councils should lose their say over local planning.
