FCC Drops National Gigabit Broadband Goal for Lower Speed Standard

The FCC voted 3-2 along party lines on August 20, 2026, to eliminate its long-term gigabit broadband goal. The prior target — 1 Gbps download and 500 Mbps upload by 2030 — is replaced with a 100 Mbps download / 20 Mbps upload standard. Under Chairman Brendan Carr, the Commission declined to set any new long-term aspirational goal. The two Democratic commissioners dissented.
