FCC Votes 3-2 to Eliminate National Gigabit Broadband Goal

The FCC voted 3-2 along party lines on August 20, 2026, to eliminate its long-term national gigabit-speed goal for broadband. The previous target of 1 Gbps download and 500 Mbps upload by 2030 is replaced with a 100 Mbps download / 20 Mbps upload standard. The Commission, under Chairman Brendan Carr, declined to set any new long-term aspirational goal. The two Democratic commissioners dissented.
