FCC Lowers National Broadband Speed Goal

The FCC voted 3-2 along party lines on August 20, 2026, to scrap its goal of bringing very fast internet — about 1,000 megabits per second download — to all Americans by 2030. The new standard is roughly one-tenth of that. Under Chairman Brendan Carr, the agency set no new long-term target. The two Democratic commissioners dissented.
