Mount Maunganui landslide review: six deaths were preventable, council knew of risk for decades

An independent review found the Mount Maunganui landslide that killed six people at Beachside Holiday Park on 22 January 2026 was preventable. Tauranga City Council had known about the site's risks for decades. Local Government Minister Simon Watts called the report "damning" and has written to all councils telling them to learn from it.
