An independent review found the Mount Maunganui landslide that killed six people at Beachside Holiday Park on 22 January 2026 was preventable. Tauranga City Council had known about the site's dangers for decades. Local Government Minister Simon Watts called the report "damning" and has written to all councils setting expectations they learn from it.
