Mount Maunganui landslide that killed six could have been stopped, review finds

A review found the Mount Maunganui landslide that killed six people at a holiday park on 22 January 2026 could have been prevented. Tauranga City Council had known the site was dangerous for decades. Minister Simon Watts called the report "damning" and wrote to all councils telling them to learn from it.
