Quebec Separatist Leader Delays Independence Vote Until Post-Trump Era

Parti Québécois leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon pledged that a PQ government would not hold an independence referendum while Donald Trump is U.S. president, waiting until after his term ends in January 2029. He argued the debate should not be "hijacked" by American political turmoil. The PQ currently leads polls ahead of Quebec's election, due by October 5, 2026.
