MPs vote to block private climate lawsuits against companies
Parliament has passed the Climate Change Response (Tort Liability) Amendment Bill 67–53, barring tort claims over climate-changing emissions. No one, including the Crown, can be held liable in tort for such harm. Minister Paul Goldsmith said emissions policy belongs with government and Parliament. The bill targeted activist Mike Smith's lawsuit against Z Energy and Fonterra. It now goes to Royal assent.
