Parliament blocks private climate lawsuits against companies in 67–53 vote
Parliament has passed the Climate Change Response (Tort Liability) Amendment Bill 67 to 53, barring tort claims for climate-changing emissions. No person, including the Crown, can be found liable in tort for such harm. Minister Paul Goldsmith said emissions policy sits with government and Parliament. The bill targeted activist Mike Smith's suit against Z Energy and Fonterra. It now proceeds to Royal assent.
