Two people died and several were injured when fast-moving wildfires swept Salamina, a Greek island west of Athens, on August 16, 2026. Two blazes erupted minutes apart amid high winds. Hundreds were evacuated by sea and land, while nearly 200 firefighters and aircraft worked to stop the fires merging over the island's mountainous terrain.
