Two Dead as Wildfires Force Mass Evacuation on Greek Island of Salamina

Two people died and several were injured as fast-moving wildfires swept the Greek island of Salamina, west of Athens, on August 16, 2026. Two blazes broke out within minutes of each other amid high winds. Hundreds were evacuated by sea and land. Nearly 200 firefighters and aircraft worked to prevent the fires from merging over the island's mountainous terrain.
