Renaissance Masterworks Stolen from Sicily Museum
Four paintings by 15th-century master Antonello da Messina were stolen from Messina's Regional Interdisciplinary Museum on August 15, 2026. The works include three panels from the 1473 San Gregorio Polyptych — a multi-panel altarpiece — and a Pietà panel once shown at the British Museum. Italy's culture minister confirmed the theft. Police are investigating how thieves bypassed the museum's alarms.
