Russia Becomes First UN Member to Recognize Taliban Government

Russia formally recognized Afghanistan's Taliban government in July 2025, the first UN member state to do so since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021. No other country has followed. The decision breaks a diplomatic isolation framework established after the US embassy closure, which had left envoy-level engagement as Washington's only channel to Kabul.
