Russia First UN Member to Recognize Taliban Government

Russia formally recognized Afghanistan's Taliban government in July 2025, making it the first UN member state to do so since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021. No other country has followed. The move ends a diplomatic isolation regime built after the US embassy closure left envoy-level engagement as Washington's sole channel to Kabul.
